Kaila Savino is a New York-based fine artist holding a BFA in Painting/ Drawing and Printmaking from SUNY Purchase. Her work explores the similarities between a surface and a human body. She became engrossed with how a simple physical attribute such as skin could play two distorted, roles in life. In order to push the boundaries of a deformed self-image, she deliberately works large scale so both the viewer and she are forced to come face to face with the discomfort.
After completing her undergraduate degree, Kaila moved to Brooklyn and was featured as an Artist in Residence at Trestle Galleries. She is currently attending The School of the Art Institute of Chicago to pursue her Masters in Art Therapy and Counseling.
"With a painting, the flaws are impermanent; every mark can be done, and undone. Unlike a body, a canvas is reusable. Therein lies the option to paint on top, destroy, rebuild, alter, and preserve. Everything (to an extent) is in my control. Unlike painting, once I carve a line in the wood, I can not un-carve it. Woodcarving forces me to accept each mark that was not meant to happen, and adapt accordingly".
